District Governor Ralph Montesanto

Ralph Montesanto, District Governor, District 7090, visited the club on October 28, 2008. He reviewed the club's operations for 2007-2008 and listened intently as board members recounted the club's support of its programmes - local and international.

Governor Ralph sent the following letter of thanks to the club:

Christine Green

President

The Rotary Club of Dundas

Dear President Christine

I really enjoyed my visit to the Dundas Rotary Club on October 28, 2008. This is the club that brought me into Rotary and the club that gave me a bursary to attend university when I graduated from high school.

The Dundas Rotary Club has been in the community since its charter on May 27, 1948 and is actively involved and well recognized in the community.

Your big project, the Senior Centre has been complete for several years and you are now supporting the Dundas Skating Rink in the Dundas Driving Park. You have already contributed $25 000 to the rink and anticipate your upcoming Gala will add another $5000.

The Dundas Rotary Club is a big supporter of youth. You send students to Slapshot and to Adventures in Citizenship. The club is a significant supporter of the Routes Centre for teens, contributing both financially and with leadership on its Board of Directors. This is a great place for youth to socialize in a safe and caring environment. You also provide an environmental award to elementary school students for the best environmental project; and, have an annual Youth Recognition Award.

The club supports the annual Community Food Drive, entertains Senior Citizens for the annual Christmas Lights Tour and is examining the installation of a clock in the Dundas Driving Park.

Internationally, the Banda Aceh Project will provide significant medical education and rebuild capacity in this area of Indonesia that was destroyed by the Tsunami two years ago. The club also provides water filtration units and public health work to communities in the Philippines.

Your fundraisers are the Lobster-Rib-Fest, the Pancake Breakfast, Travelogue and the Gala.

Signed: Ralph Montesanto, District Governor

John Watson

It is with deep sadness we record the death of John Watson, Honorary Rotarian, Past President and Paul Harris Fellow, on August 31, 2008. John joined Rotary in Jan. 1996, serving in many capacities within the club and actively supporting the club's initiatives locally and internationally - in particular, the Dr. Graham's Homes, in Assam, India.

He brought a quiet and generous presence to our meetings and functions. "Service Above Self. They Benefit Most Who Serve Best." - this was John's best-loved theme with which he reminded us all at Rotary.

Cactus Festival Parade 2008

For the Cactus Festival August 2008, both Dundas Rotary Clubs combined forces for the Rotary Fire Truck float, under the control of driver and Rotarian Keith Green, and spouse Madame Rotary President Christine Green.

The parade turnout for floats participating and watching crowds (families by the hundreds) along the route through Dundas was memorable. Rotarians walking alongside the float distributed candies to the children - expectations for dental destroying sweets were not disappointed.

The Rotary float displayed information on the Dundas Valley Sunrise Rotary Club's " Ice Pad Project," in the Dundas Driving Park. The Ice Pad fund raising chart "thermometer" reminded Dundas folk of Rotary's community commitment for 2008. District Governor Ralph Montesanto and Sunrise president Bill Armstrong were on hand and walked with the float doing candy duty.

One final note of good fortune, the fire truck float completed its run before the heavens opened - as far as I know all Rotarians escaped an August deluge. The same cannot be said for others in the tail of the parade. Apart from that damp end it was a wonderful parade.
